TWHBEA CANADIAN GO! PROGRAM

CANADIAN GELDING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM

TWHBEA INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

BEST OF AMERICA BY HORSEBACK

As a fellow Canadian, and avid supporter of TWHBEA, I am really excited to announce the expansion of the TWHBEA GO! PROGRAM to Canada! I know that many of you feel that TWHBEA has not provided many localized events for Canadian members, and the launch of the GO! PROGRAM in Canada is reflective of an increased initiative to reach out to and support our international members. This is a program for Canadian Gelding owners to compete and interact with other Canadian Gelding owners. The program is for Canadians only! See the attached information sheet on the Canadian Go! Program.

TWHBEA has established an International Committee. This Committee is charged with overseeing the development and promotion of activities outside of the United States. TWHBEA is committed to helping international affiliated organizations develop membership, provide clinics, help with trade show exposure, sponsor horse shows, trails initiatives, and any other activities to promote the Tennessee Walking Horse in Canada and other countries. Already, the European TWHBEA members have, with the help of TWHBEA staff and professionals, had numerous clinics, participated in significant trade shows, developed the European Championships and Futurity and are on track for a very busy and productive 2009. It is time for Canada to get on board. TWHBEA has a large membership in Israel, and this year will mark the first TWHBEA clinic held in Israel! If we ask for TWHBEA support in Canada, TWHBEA will listen!

We all know that Alberta has a large contingent of TWH Owners, and an active Association, the Tennessee Walking Horse Association of Western Canada (TWHAWC). They are already making plans with TWHBEA to sponsor a booth at the Mane Event, a significant Equine Trade Show in Red Deer, AB, April 24th to 26th; to host a Canadian Clinic that will cover general horsemanship, and horsemanship unique to the TWH, show preparation and good trail riding the weekend of May 29th to 31st in Central Alberta, and the presentation of the first annual Canadian Championships, September 11th through 13th, which will include both a TWHBEA Regional Versatility Show and a TWHBEA Regional Futurity Show. Top TWHBEA Clinicians will be attending at these events. Mr. Stan Butt, Executive Director of TWHBEA will be on hand at the May event. In addition, it is anticipated that other Executive Committee members will be on hand at these events to listen to members concerns and input into the development of Canadian programs.

For many of you, travelling to Alberta is quite an event; particularly in these hard times. However, if you are able to do so, you might seriously want to try to attend either the Mane Event or the Clinic. Bobby Richards will be in attendance at both events. There will be other representatives from TWHBEA at both events as well. Mr. Pruett, the President of TWHBEA is hoping to attend both events, and Mr. Butt, the Executive Director anticipates attending the clinic in May. I am looking forward to attending both of these events. The Mane Event will have demonstrations both by TWHAWC members and mini gait clinics presented by Bobby. Obviously, the Clinic in May will be full of activities and will be a great chance to visit with fellow Walking Horse enthusiasts and TWHBEA executives. There will clinic activities, social activities and some excellent trail riding. For information on either of these events, please contact Grace Adams at 780 748 3663, or e-mail her at quintetwalkers@hotmail.com.

Alberta is not the only province with TWHBEA members or other TWH owners. It was not that long ago that British Columbia had 2 strong TWH Associations. There are still many members in BC. What can TWHBEA do to assist the re-establishment of a TWH Association in BC? Speak up BC members, we would like to see the re-emergence of your presence. There can be no better place on earth to ride a Tennessee Walking Horse, than British Columbia - everyone knows that!!!

Those of you in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are obviously more isolated. What can we do for you? We would hope that programs like the GO! Program would allow members in areas where there are not as many TWH owners to participate in programs for Tennessee Walking Horses. Are there other things we can do to promote the Tennessee Walking Horse in your area? To help you and your fellow members to really get more enjoyment from your horses? Please tell us.

And not to be accused of being regional and a typical Westerner, what about those of you in Eastern Canada - Ontario and beyond. What can TWHBEA do for you? Please let us know.

TWHBEA wants to listen to your needs, your interests and your concerns. TWHBEA is not looking to bring any programs to your area that are not welcome there. For example, we have developed a special rule book for International Horse Shows, recognizing that many countries do not promote performance horses, or heavy shod horses. The new Rule Book provides classes for barefoot horses. It recognizes European restrictions on the clipping of horses. TWHBEA respects cultural and international differences and will work to ensure that Canadian interests and concerns are addressed.

As many of you may be aware, TWHBEA established an International Committee in 2007. Like many things, it has taken some time to really get this Committee up and running. This Committee is still a work in progress, but at the December meetings of TWHBEA, I attended the International Committee meeting and there were many others there; both in person and by conference call. If you are interested in being a part of this Committee - and all TWHBEA members are welcome - contact TWHBEA. You do not have to go to Tennessee to participate in any TWHBEA Committee. All Committee meetings include the option to participate by conference call, and the telephone number is an 800 number, so it is toll free. In fact, in the December meeting, there were participants from France, Germany and Israel by telephone.

If you are not in a position to participate on the International Committee, you can also send your concerns to TWHBEA in a variety of ways - contact your Regional Director and ask him/her to take your concerns to TWHBEA. You can contact TWHBEA directly - send your concerns, questions, suggestions, comments to any of the TWHBEA contact persons listed below.

You are encouraged to check out our new website. You won't recognize it. Of particular interest may be the various programs that TWHBEA hosts. Click on "Association" and then go to Programs. There are several programs there developed for trail riders, endurance riders, etc. If there is a program there that interests you, you are encouraged to get involved. If the program doesn't quite work for you in your area, contact us. We want to work with you and develop programs that will work for Canadians!

Another interesting program in the US, that might interest to some of you, particularly those of you in Central Canada, is the Best of America by Horseback program. Saskatchewan and Manitoba, this ride is on your back door! You can check this event out on our website. TWHBEA is an official partner with BOABH. In 2009, BOABH is going to host a ride from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. There will be an official contingent of TWHBEA members and TWH's on this ride. BOABH televises its events on television , and it is seen throughout the US and in many other countries. Participants can ride all or just parts of the ride. A Canadian contingent in the ride or that part of it as it approaches the Canadian border could be really something! Personally, I have participated in a Best of America by Horseback ride, and it is a great experience. All individuals riding gaited horses ride in a separate group - after all, we don't want to run over those poor souls who have not yet seen the way. TWHBEA has negotiated special rates for TWHBEA members wishing to participate in this event or any part of it. You can get the full details of the ride, and Best of America by Horseback by going to the TWHBEA website and clicking on the links to BOABH (Associations and then click on Partnerhsips). If you are interested in this project, contact us. The details are not firmed up yet, but we will make sure that we keep you in the loop and that you are part of TWHBEA plans.

Finally, make sure that TWHBEA has your e-mail address. We are in the process of initiating a variety of communications to our Members by e-mail, including an e-mail Newsletter. Check the website: www.twhbea.com regularly. Lots of information is posted there. If there is something that catches your eye, let us know. If you see a program that is being initiated elsewhere, and you think it would work well in your area, tell us. Work with us to adapt such programs to fit your needs.

Canadian GO! Program

Canadian Gelding Opportunities Program

The Canadian GO! Program is open to all registered TWHBEA geldings in Canada, regardless of age. Each participant (owner) must be a member of TWHBEA in good standing. Upon paying the annual nomination fee, the nominated gelding is eligible to participate in any category of this program. The program is broken down into two award categories: Category I - The Canadian GO! Competition Division and Category II - The Canadian GO! Super Gelding Award. The Canadian GO! Competition Division is divided into four categories: pleasure, versatility, endurance trail and recreational trail. Each category is further broken down into two age categories: Junior Gelding (4 years and under) and Senior Gelding (5 years and over). The Canadian GO! Super Gelding Award will be awarded to the gelding that accumulates the most points during the year.

This program will run from year to year. Points will be counted beginning on November 1st of each year and running through October 31st of the next year. Points will begin to accumulate after entry forms have been turned in and all nomination fees have been paid. The Canadian GO! Program Points Log must be turned in by November 1st and will be verified by TWHBEA. For shows that are not turned into TWHBEA to be published as show records on IPED's, a class sheet signed by the show secretary verifying the placing must be included with the Log Book. Points will be earned by the placing of each gelding in a judged competition with the only exception being the Recreational Trail division. Single judge shows will be counted as single points, three judge shows will be counted as double point shows, and five judges will be counted as triple point shows. The points in a single judge show will be awarded by 1st place - 10 points, 2nd place - 9 points, etc. Recreational Trail geldings must fill out the GO! Canadian Recreational Trail Log where for each 5 hours of recreational riding, one point will be awarded. Thus, for 50 hours of recreational riding (time in the saddle), the gelding would earn 10 points. A detailed Log must be kept naming place, time and distance ridden.

There will be an annual nomination fee of $20.00 for each Competitive Division entered. $10.00 will be placed in the Competitive Division that the horse is nominated for, and $10.00 will be placed into the Canadian GO! Super Gelding Award account. All monies collected will be paid out in a given year. The owner of record at the conclusion of each point year, as determined above, will be the recipient of the Canadian GO! Programs cash awards. Awards will be presented at the TWHBEA Awards Banquet each year. TWHBEA will match the nomination fees up to the first 100 geldings in all GO! Programs. The number will be reviewed at the March Executive Committee Meeting.

The top five geldings in each division of The Canadian GO! Competitive Division (Category I), will receive monetary awards, with recognition given also to geldings ranking 6 through 10. A special bonus discount of 10% will be given for advertising in the VOICE Magazine in a special section for these winners. There will be only one winner with payout for the Canadian GO! Super Gelding Award (Category II). The winner will be the gelding with the highest overall accumulation of points.
