2017 Fultonvale Horse Showcase

A dedicated group of volunteers spent their Sunday giving kids their first exposure to our wonderful breed the Tennessee Walking Horse. As well as an Extreme Cowboy Race demonstration.

We arrived before 9am to get the horses ready for a day of giving pony rides to a total of 116 kids! Once brushed and saddled the horses and their leaders were ready for the onslaught of young kids. Many of the kids had never been on a horse, some were hesitant and others delighted. I was fortunate to have many chatty children, it makes walking in a circle for 5+ hours in the sun, a little more fun. After a lap or two if the child was interested they'd learn to hold the reins, stop, back up and maybe a circle or two. Other kids just wanted to hold onto the saddle and there were a few who once actually on a horse, weren't ready to try it yet. That's why there is always next year!

Pony rides were done in a morning and afternoon session. With groups of kids rotating between stations. In between the two sessions we had a team of parents and volunteers set up the arena for the Head to Head Extreme Cowboy Race demonstration. We were fortunate enough to have 7 volunteers to showcase the Young Guns, Youth, Novice and Pro divisions. The stands were full for the demonstration and they got to see the horses lope, go over bridges, jumps, and tarps. Riders pick up rings or water jugs from horse back, ground tie and much more. Our wonderful volunteers packed up all our obstacles as we tried to see how much we could actually fit in the trailer. It was a farmer version of tetris.

The final group finished just before 4pm and then came the unsaddling and clean up. I'd like to thank all of our volunteers for all the hard work and time they put into showing off this wonderful breed. They pulled trailers, lead horses, set up the obstacles, made sure people and horses had water and so much more. I'd also like to acknowledge the youth volunteers. I watched our youth lead around young kids as young as 3. They made sure the kids in the saddle were okay. If they were nervous they encouraged them, the confident ones were shown how to hold the reins and do a little more. Our youth were professional ambassadors for the breed..

THANK YOU to all the volunteers for making this showcase a success

Laurie hopes to provide the tools to anyone wishing to grow their relationship between themselves and their equine partners. It is Laurie’s hope that everyone she gets the opportunity to meet and mentor to can walk away with new knowledge that may allow new opportunities for horse and rider to follow their dreams and reach their goals, as she once was given.

‘GAITED EXPERIENCE’
May 28th & 29th
With
Terrance & Joyce Moyer

Picture
Joyce is a college graduate, Magna Cum Laude in Business Education and a Master’s Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University. She is an adjunct faculty member of the Educational Outreach programs, and holds a teaching certificate with the State of Ohio.

Add 41 years of professional tax accounting to this skill set plus a lifetime of equine horsemanship, breeding and farm management. Plus, she is an avid horsewoman and enjoys leading trail rides.
Joyce holds a lifetime membership in TWHBEA and NWHA. She has served on most of the committees for the Breeder’s Association and has been on the Executive Committee for 5 years as VP Youth and VP Marketing. Joyce is also a Certified Riding Instructor per TWHBEA’s regulations.

Husband, Terrance, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts from the Bowling Green State University. He jokingly says “that means he knows a little about a lot of things and not a whole lot about most things”. Terrance works for the Ford Motor Company, manages Maple Crest Farms, and provides assistance in data entry for Moyer Accounting Services. At the farm Terrance instructs both riders and horses for increased skills, manages the breeding program including acquisition and sale of qualified stock, and enjoys for trail riding and the show ring. He is a lifetime member of TWHBEA and NWHA and  a Certified Riding Instructor through TWHBEA.  Terrance prefers a natural horsemanship approach used to increase balanced riding skills for correct athletic gaits of the horse.

Together we have been blessed in traveling to Chile, South America to initiate a program to import Tennessee Walking Horses. This would be the entrance of the first gaited horse to this country. We traveled to Belgium, northern, and southern Germany provided through TWHBEA USLG funds presenting horsemanship clinics.

Looking forward to meeting and joining you folks way, way, way up north in Canada. Going to be an adventure!

Last weekend was the WCR & Futurity, hard to believe that show season is over for another year.   It was a pleasure to have Connie Waldo as our judge.  She took the time to involve the audience in many of her classes, whether it was asking for cheering participation or information on what some of her questions to the class participants were.  After the show she made a special effort to talk to our youth; congratulating them and offering constructive comments on how they can do better in certain areas.  Thanks to all our volunteers; Shelly Knott as gate keeper, Loretta Borden as ring steward, Brent Bachman as announcer and Mona McMillan for setting up center ring.  Also a HUGE thanks to Sande Hirsekorn for doing a fabulous job as our Show Secretary.  To Nicole Hirsekorn for her outstanding job as Show Director which can sometimes be overwhelming, thanks very much.  We appreciate all your hard work. - Loretta Borden

For anyone curious about how the ACTHA rides are set up:

The day begins at 8am with an on site breakfast. 9am is rider registration, followed by a judges meeting and then rider orientation where the route is discussed and the different obstacles you'll encounter. 10am is the first ride time. (Ride times are picked when you register) The ride is as fast or as relaxed as you make it. At the obstacles the judges are looking for quite horse and riders who can navigate the obstacle at ease. That's not to say your horse will cooperate, but that's half the fun! The obstacles are meant to be challenging but not dangerous. If at anytime you feel there is an issue you can pass the challenge. All judge teams are equipped with radios, so if you are new to trail riding this is a very good place to start. There are different divisions which will have different levels of obstacles, so new or pro, there is something for everyone.
Once your ride is complete and your horse watered, there is lunch and hanging out with good people. When all the riders have returned the judges are brought back and the points tallied. Finally the award ceremony and prize presentation is held and you can find out how you and your horse did!
